Garland Firefighters Save 5-Month-Old Baby With the AirVac Anti-Choking Device

A Garland, Texas mother is praising the swift actions of her local firefighters who successfully used the AirVac anti-choking device to save her 5-month-old baby girl, Camilla, from choking.

Mother Marytza Mendes stated the situation quickly turned critical after Camilla began choking on saliva, turning blue and struggling to breathe. Traditional back blows and chest compressions failed to clear the obstruction.

Firefighters Kelsey Kasper and Melody Gunnoe rushed to the scene. Recognizing the urgency, they used the AirVac device, which the Garland Fire Department had recently acquired. The device's powerful suction quickly cleared the baby's airway, and she immediately let out a loud scream, indicating she was breathing again.

"She was blue she wasn't breathing well... We never used it before, but instantly she started crying and we knew everything was going to be okay." — Firefighter Kelsey Kasper

This rescue highlights the critical role of having an AirVac kit on hand, proving its effectiveness and ease of use in pediatric emergencies when seconds count.
